The bottom line in any kind of performance is can you trust yourself enough to allow yourself to let go and deliver the message of the song from the depth of your being (soul) and not allow yourself to focus on your technique? From my point of view, this is the goal when it comes to a performance.
I have watched my students commit to not turning back no matter what, and have watched them blossom. Despite the programming they have had to combat while practicing their exercises (I’m not good enough, there are better singers than me, I’m not ready), they still emerge victorious because absolutely nothing they do is wasted. Their uphill battle they must endure while working on their breathing, diaphragm support, and especially vocal placement, is always worth it once they can relax into regularly attaining the tone that comes up from deep within. The final result is ALWAYS worth the work the student puts into it.
Victory is always imminent when you are pointed in the right direction coupled with regular practice and attention to your craft. Singing is something that we can ALL do. Although we all have our preferences when it comes to voices, everyone has the right to sing.
If you find yourself wanting to sing just for the sheer joy of singing, go for it, and please do not compare yourself to anyone as everyone has their own voice, just like everyone has their own fingerprint. And if you choose to develop your voice for whatever reason (to be a better singer, speaker, and ultimately communicator), remember, no matter how challenging you might find learning how to keep your vocal placement, breathing properly, your sound resonating, and relaxing your body, the audience will be entertained once you trust yourself and just let go!
Keep on Singing,
