Chocolate Pudding Anyone?
There is a lesson to be learned about performance through one of my favourite desserts, chocolate pudding. I thoroughly enjoy chocolate pudding. I have never said that I enjoy it exclusively because of the way it looks or the way it feels or the way it tastes. My chocolate pudding experience is amazing because of all three components working simultaneously. Everything is communicating the same message: Satisfaction!
The same goes for musical performances. Yes, the performer can look great and the sound of the voice may sound lovely, and the emotion displayed is appropriate to the song being performed, but all three of them working simultaneously IS what delivers a great performance.
The feeling that swells up inside of me due to what the performer is communicating with every aspect of their being (physical, mental, emotional all communicating the same thing) is what will keep me focused on the message being delivered through music. The performer grips my heart and literally makes me FEEL. And that is why professionals make it look easy, because they are communicating one message.
As performers, the currency that we work with is emotions. We need to effortlessly allow our true emotions (appropriate for the song) to come to the surface and flow through our interpretation, to touch the awaiting audience who wants to receive what we have to give them.
Like I always say, the audience wants to SEE you, HEAR you and most of all they want to FEEL you. In order to serve up a wonderful performance, all of who you are, physically, mentally and emotionally, must clearly communicate as one for your audience to leave feeling satisfied. Bon appetite!
Keep on singing,
