When we hear ‘work with what you’ve got’ we usually think of resources, but I have decided to apply this statement to someone that is extremely important, myself.
I have heard this phrase over and over again and most people do not apply it to themselves. We are always working on developing ourselves like what we are already is not enough. Work with what you’ve got, your own design. We are so busy developing who we are, to make ourselves so much better, that we don’t even see that we are trying to get rid of some of the most amazing parts of who we already are because we are trying so hard to fit into someone else’s idea of who we are supposed to be.
Life has designed us to respond in only the way we can respond, to experience the only way we experience and to express the way only we can express ourselves. Fitting in is literally death to the amazing human being you already are!
What does this have to do with singing, EVERYTHING!
In order for the song that you choose to sing to have any meaning and depth, it has to come from your soul. It has to come from a place of knowing, deep feeling and trust. You cannot be wondering if you are good enough or hoping that it comes outright. You need to be sure about how you feel about the song you are singing, and have no doubt about your instrument, which is YOU.
We have no problem saying a Steinway grand piano is amazing or a Stradivarius violin is amazing but when it comes to who we are, we are ALWAYS upgrading and unfortunately believing that we are not good enough. YOU ARE ENOUGH! You need to know that the reason the song comes alive when you sing is because YOU are singing it, otherwise, it is notes on sheet music or lyrics on paper. You bring life to it through your experience and technique and only you will express it the way only YOU can.
So, work with what you’ve got and know that YOU are more than enough no matter what you choose to sing, do and ultimately BE.
Keep on singing,
Roxanne Goodman
